How to Write a Standard Curriculum vitae (CV)

A CV, an ideal method to urge employment, maybe a concise document that summarizes an individual’s unique skills, character, experience, and achievements. The CV may be a Latin phrase that loosely translated means ‘the course of my life’. A CV outlines a person’s academic and professional history which is typically used for applying for jobs. What to Include in a Resume?

Personal Details:

The essential personal details to include are the candidate’s full name and contact information – this is usually both his/her phone number and email address.

Career Objective:

If a candidate is a recent school or university leaver without much professional experience, he/she should begin his/her resume or CV with a career objective in a short sentence or two. If he/she has gained experience in the workforce, a career objective is less necessary, however, he/she may want to replace it with a career summary, describing his/her professional profile in a short sentence or two. A candidate should place either his/her education or work experience list next, depending on which he/she has achieved more recently.

Education:

At the time of making the list, the candidate should put the most recent educational experiences first. He /She should include his/her qualifications, institutions he/she studied at, graduation dates, and other specializations. He /She should mention any special awards and other educational achievements.

Work Experience:

The candidate should list his/her most recent jobs including the title of the position, name, and location of the organization, and dates of employment. In point form under each job, give a brief overview of his/her role, responsibilities, and achievements, weaving in the skills required. Internships and volunteer work can also be mentioned here.

Additional Information:

The candidate may like to create headings such as ‘Skills’, ‘Strengths’ or ‘Interests’ and list information that would be relevant to the job He /She is applying for. Information that illustrates his/her proficiency in languages, computer programs, or medical knowledge should be included here.

It’s always a good idea to include two to three references at the bottom of the candidate’s resume. A referee can be a former manager or tutor at university – just he/ she has to make sure he/she asks their permission before listing their name, position, company, and contact details. Otherwise, he/she may wish to write “References available on request”.

Length of a resume:

He /She should Keep his/her resume short and concise to make a good impression in a quick glance. It may be one to two pages if he/she has under 10 years of professional experience. Senior executives or academics may wish to have resumes that are three pages or more.

Format and style:

The design and layout of a resume or CV should be neat and easy to read. He /She should use only one or two easy to read fonts and include headers, bullet points, and paragraphs. He /She should make sure that he/she writes his/her resume consistently in the first person, and has perfect spelling and grammar.

What to exclude in your resume:

  1. Personal details such as your religion, age, or marital status
  2. Every job you’ve ever had, especially when it isn’t relevant to the job you’re currently applying for
  3. Salary expectation or previous salaries you’ve received.

In most situations, a CV is that the first contact you've got with a prospective employer and it's your chance to form an honest first impression. You use it to point out your prospective employer why they ought to hire you and what the advantages of getting you on their team are going to be. It is much more than simply a run-down of your career history, it's your passport to a replacement job.


Principles to remember:

• Avoid false information and irrelevant claims.

• Write your unique qualities, personality traits, skills, and experience that make you stand out from the others.
