Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’ is a the best form of romantic comedy. A romantic comedy is a play in which violates the classical or neo-classical inflexible rules and norms and offers with love at first sight, unbridled feelings and passions, imagination and fancy, fun and laughter. There are many elements of romantic comedy such as first sight love, influence of nature, supernatural elements, role of forest, romantic setting, youthful love, sad happiness, witty statement, and happy ending. We want to talk about quite a number aspect and elements of the play ‘As You Like It’ to justify how far it is a romantic comedy.

Definition of Romantic Comedy:

Romantic Comedy is a form of drama which deals with love as it's main theme and most of it's scenes are set in a romantic environment away from normal human habitation.

As You Like It as a Romantic Comedy:
The blending of comic and tragic incidents in As You Like It is romantic. In this play the banishment of Duke Senior and Rosalind, Oliver's arrangement to burn down Orlando's housing are tragic happenings. In any case, the play in its entire effect is a satire which presents a lot of happiness and merriment to us.

However, the most striking romantic thing in the plot is the theme of youthful love. In this play, Rosalind and Orlando fall in love and affection with each other at their first sight. Rosalind makes a lot of witty remarks, The following part is mentionable here-

"Men are April when they woo,

December when they wed"

Then we discover Orlando in the Forest of Arden composing verses in reward of her beauty and virtue; and Rosalind disguised as Ganymede induces Orlando to make love to her saying: “Come on, woo me, woo me. I’m in a good mood now and likely to give you what you want. What would you say to me now if I really were your precious little Rosalind?” The surprising love of Celia and Oliver is a romantic affair too. Phebe’s love for Ganymede has additionally a romantic basis. We see Orlando in the Forest of Arden composing verse and hanging those verses on the trees in that forest. As-

"Hang there my verse,

In witness of my love"

Deserves as well a dark house and whip as madman do."

As You Like It unquestionably is a romantic comedy in its treatment of some sweet sentimental and romantic songs and music that add remarkable fascination and melodious environment in the play. The narrator calls the people to come to the forest to live in peacefully. As we see-

"Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly:

Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:

Then heigh-ho, the holly!

This life is most jolly."

Moreover, the play is romantic additionally in its setting. In the city life, Rosalind’s and Orlando’s virtues arouse so a great deal of envy that both ought to flee to keep away from being murdered. In the country, these two noble characters prosper. Virtuous Duke Senior appears to be happier in exile than he used to be at court. Country people like Corin and Audrey are simple, hardworking people. Silvius and Phebe may additionally appear silly, however they are innocent and alternatively charming. So it might also be simply to say that As You Like It is a romantic comedy.
